PAGE 1 PRINTERS: RELIABLE PRINTING. SUSTAINABLE RESULTS.

Page 1 Printers has reduced environmental impact by using KODAK SONORA Process Free Plates for its offset printing. Traditional printing plates are imaged on a platesetter, and then the plates are run through a bath of chemical developer and water in the plate processing equipment. Once processed, the plates are put on the printing press to begin printing. Process free plates are different. They use newer technology to skip the chemical processing step completely. Once they are imaged on the platesetter, they are “press ready” and can be put on press immediately for printing. And there’s more, click here to read the whole issue! Page 1 Printers Newsletter

Leadership training at Page 1 Printers

Not long ago, we asked Enterprise Minnesota—a consulting organization that helps manufacturing companies become more efficient— to provide a Frontline Leadership training class for 16 of our company’s leaders, with the goal of improving internal communications and increasing efficiency.  The training helps leaders increase knowledge of their own communication style along with the styles used by their team members to improve interpersonal effectiveness and productivity. At the conclusion of the two-day program all participants had learned how to identify each of the four leading “Social Styles” and how to put in place action plans to effectively work with and accommodate each style.

“As a result of the training, we have seen improved communication across the board, not only inside the plant, but externally with our customers as well,” said Craig Ryan, general manager at Page 1.

You can read more about the process on Enterprise Minnesota’s website at  http://www.enterpriseminnesota.org/our-clients/case-study/page-1-printers-leadership-development

Update on New Postal Hubs—Good News for Community Newspapers

The National Newspaper Association (NNA) is reporting that the U.S. Postal Service has announced it expects to have 187 service hubs open by fall to provide direct transportation for newspaper mail in locations where mail processing plants have closed.
The chief operating officer of the Postal Service credited the NNA with working to establish the hubs. NNA had requested study of the hub operation in 2012, and has met with USPS continuously since then on the opening of the hubs as mail plants have closed.
The NNA announcement explained the service hubs:
“A service hub permits publishers to prepare mail destined for nearby post offices in “Direct” containers that can be handed off directly at a hub to ride postal transportation to the destination post office, so that 5-digit, Carrier-Route—or mixed 5 digit containers combining both—can be dock-transferred between one post office and another in the Hub territory, usually that of the old Sectional Center Facility. Publishers wanting to enter mail at the hub, possibly because the newspaper is printed nearby, can get the old SCF price for entering these containers there. The establishment of hubs has become a pressing necessity for community newspapers that rely on the mail for circulation because nearly 100 mail processing centers have been shuttered by USPS in recent years and another 82 closings are planned.”
NNA Postal Committee Chair Max Heath said that newspapers should check the hub list to make sure via the NNA or their post office that dock transfers are occurring. Heath also advised newspapers to check with the software vendor to assure SCF prices being granted for direct containers dropped at hubs.
The complete article can be found on the NNA’s website.

Page 1 provides no-hassle saturation mailing

You’re printing up 10,000 flyers and you want to saturate a specific geographical area market with them. Page 1 Printers is printing them, but now who takes care of the mailing? Does one of your people need to do the research and figure it out? Do you go directly to the Postal Service and work your way through the permits, fees and regulations? Who manages all this going forward? Do you hire a distribution company?

Actually, the no-hassle solution is to let Page 1 handle the saturation mailing for you. This kind of mailing is based entirely on USPS carrier routes, and there are several options you can choose. Tell us the area you want covered, whether you want all the addresses or just the residences, whether you want city routes or rural routes or both. You can even decide to include P.O. boxes. We’ll figure out the mailing for you, using our permit. You don’t have to deal with your own permitting process, postage statements, or other fees. You also don’t have to make a huge time investment to stay on top of postal regulations or update the routes. We do all that for you at no extra charge. Ask Kirk or your customer service rep for more information.

As printers, we obviously believe in the importance of printed matter, even as we acknowledge the importance of the digital world of which we’re a part. That is why it is so interesting to read what other professionals have to say about the future of print. Several months ago, we shared a link to an interesting article by media guru Kevin Slimp that addressed print newspapers specifically. Recently we came across another article on the subject, this one dealing more with the trade journal publication segment of the printing industry. We thought you might enjoy reading what the writer had to say from the perspective of a PR agency that supplies content to both print and digital publications on behalf of their industrial clients. Full disclosure—we have been a client of this agency for a couple of years now. But we think their blog post will be of interest to anyone in the printing and publishing business. You can read it now by following this link: http://www.ellcom.us/blog/index.php/2015/02/

Expansion Update

Just a little over a year ago, we were breaking ground on a new 7,500 square foot expansion to our facility. We needed the space to house a new 16-page sheetfed press and additional warehousing area. This past fall it all went live, and we’ve been running the new press for about the last 9 months. It has really opened up new markets to us, allowing us to create high-end, glossy printed pages but in a very cost-efficient manner. If you haven’t received a quote from us in the last 6 months or so, we encourage you to email Kirk at kfriederick@page1printers.com for more information on how affordable this kind of printing can be.

Top 5 reasons to choose or recommend Page 1

Over the past year or so, we’ve been talking a lot about the key differences that make Page 1 Printers your first call for any kind of commercial printing. Here’s a quick recap of why these core competencies matter to your business:
1. Economical web printing. If you need primarily a lower-cost print option, our non-heatset web printing system is intrinsically faster than a sheetfed press and is capable of producing up to 30,000 impressions per hour—and that translates to a more economical job.
2. Premium printed products. Our 16-page sheetfed press can handle larger, higher-end jobs, with higher resolution printing and more precise color control. Our smaller 8-page sheetfed press gives us the flexibility to do “combo jobs”—a slick, sheetfed-press printed cover on a web-printed book or booklet, for example.
3. Insert/mailing system helps control mailing list costs by verifying address formats for accuracy, trimming your postage rates while increasing delivery percentage.
4. Free digital file preview. You can get your jobs submitted and approved faster than before and collaborate with us on changes and reviews in real-time. Your files will be automatically checked for problems like incorrect colors, lo-res images, improperly embedded fonts and more. And if you choose to use the tools available in our online preview, you can check CMYK separations, zoom to the tiniest detail and more. All at no extra charge.
5. Dedicated delivery fleet. With our dedicated delivery truck fleet, we make multiple weekly trips to Fargo-Moorhead, Omaha and Lincoln, Des Moines, Minneapolis and Eau Claire. In fact, we’ll make deliveries pretty much anywhere within a 300-mile radius of our home base in southwest Minnesota. The trucks range from a full-sized semi and trailer to a standard cargo van; in between, we have a cube van and two straight trucks. Our three larger trucks have lift-gates, because we know that some of our customers don’t have loading docks. As printers, we understand what a deadline is—and that understanding is shared by our delivery drivers and dispatchers.
